The Transportation Revolution: An Expansion Equation

Objective: Describe development in/of transportation in the United States

Objective Answer:

1) Road ways were th first major step in this development

2) Turnpikes were an idea that came off of the roadways. Turnpikes were simply broader highways that allowed for speedier transport

2)The revolution began with the boom in steam powered engines and more specifically boats (Robert Fulton's Clermont)

2) Following the steam boat era canals became prominent in transportating goods efficiently (Erie Canal)

3) Finally railway systems exploded. They were significant for they transported people and goods

Ultimatley the Transportation Revolution was the gateway to expansion in the United States.

Population, economies, and small towns all prospered and grew from such a revoltion.

These are images of the population and growth of smaller cities and towns in the United States in 1800 and 1860. The image on the left would have taken place before or at the beginning of the Transportation Revolution and the image on the right would have take place more towards the end of the revolution. As you can see the population expanded or grew significantly out west due to the Transportation Revolution. Not only did populations grow, economies boomed as well these images are meant to show the growth and expansion caused by this revolution.
